Dialogue — Greetings

Eldorian: Glad you stopped by. Is there something I can help you with? Eldorian: The young elf practically bounces as he spots you, his eyes wide with excitement and a grin forming before you’ve even spoken.

Hello there! I’m Eldorian. Things in the Wildwood are a bit tense right now. You’ll be safer near the village walls. Eldorian: Eldorian’s smile brightens as you approach.

Hello again. I’m glad you’re here. I found something in the forest. A knot of dark power, I think. If we cut it out, Earlwood breathes easier. Will you come with me? Eldorian: Hello again. Do you have a moment? I’d like you to join me on a scout. Eldorian: As you approach, Eldorian has not yet noticed you, and his face has none of its usual brightness. When he spots you, the smile returns.

You made it. Any trouble along the way?

Dialogue — General

Eldorian: Me? Well, I am one of Alaric’s finest adventurers and students! He has tasked me with manning the Deed Board. This is where villagers post any requests for aid they might have. Eldorian: I’m great! The village is in a bit of a tough spot, but we look after one another, and what a chance to prove myself! Every hero needs a crisis to test them. Eldorian: Eldorian’s eyes turn to the ground, as if being reminded of something he wished forgotten.

Ah… the stone tablet. Yes, it is… difficult for us to speak of.

It tells of the Veylenth Vordae, the Age of Elven Atrocity.

Our own emperor, our kings… they turned upon our people. Nine of every ten were lost. Eldorian: You know we elves can see into the future… though now, only moments ahead.

Long ago, the strongest among us saw far further, years, centuries, even millennia.

They chose to cull our kind… believing it would avert a greater disaster.

To this day, we debate, was it right? Was it necessary?

What do you believe? Eldorian: An expression of self-doubt overtakes Eldorian, his shimmering temporal eyes once again peering into the ground.

Perhaps… you are right. I… do not know for certain. Eldorian: An expression of self-doubt overtakes Eldorian, his shimmering temporal eyes once again peering into the ground.

I… want to believe that. Truly. But I am not certain. Eldorian: Eldorian’s eyes raise to you, his youthful exuberance returning to his face.

Thank you. I will remember your words.

Now then, back to it. Until next time! Eldorian: He looks up at you for a moment, before turning away.

Yes… you are right. I cannot linger on this.

Let’s return to the task at hand. Eldorian: A cheerful expression overtakes Eldorian, his smile spreading from cheek to cheek.

So it’s true! Everyone’s talking about it. You defeated that creature?

It’s been ages since anyone has accomplished such a feat, not since Alaric.

You must be a true hero. I hope one day I can do the same. Eldorian: Thank you, your words give me strength.

One day, I’ll be a great hero, like Alaric and like you. Eldorian: Eldorian looks shocked, like a deer that has just noticed an incoming fireball.

Ha… yes, of course. I’m sorry; I got ahead of myself. Eldorian: Alaric? Isn’t he the greatest?

The hero of Earlwood, the Chosen of the Forest! You know, the stories about him reach as far as my hometown and even farther!

He’s the reason I traveled here to Earlwood so I could train under him and observe him.

One day, I will be like him. Eldorian: You don’t know? They’re incredible. During the last Goblin Crisis, he saved the village.

They say he fought off wave after wave of goblins, all alone, never backing down!

Hundreds of goblins were gone. He faced the Goblin King and won. They say he didn’t eat or sleep for weeks.

He saved the village; he saved the forest. That made him a legend.

The goblins and even the forest itself won’t launch a full assault while he remains here. That is also why he won’t leave the village. Eldorian: The Chosen of the Forest is meant to lead through the forest’s greatest trials.

Each age, one is named; it is sacred to us elves. The Chosen leads us into a new age.

And Alaric, he’s the first human ever chosen.

The elves must have been furious: a human!

But when the Green Knight rides with Ceres’s will and names him, no one can deny it. Eldorian: It truly is! One day, I’ll stand tall like him, a hero guiding my people.

Did you need anything else? Eldorian: Every bit of it is true, I swear!

I hope that one day, I’ll be a hero too, someone my people can look to.

Did you need anything else? Eldorian: You defeated the Forest King? Truly? Wow.

Back home, we’re taught the Forest Kings and the laws of the forest.

They’re said to be emissaries of Ceres: her word and will, given form.

Each has a kingdom. Each has its own shape. Eldorian: I didn’t grow up here, so I know less of him than the Kings of my home.

But I believe the Elves and Fae here once called him Aelwynor.

You might have seen his visage in the old Elven ruins, deeper in the forest.

The villagers worship him, though I doubt most have truly seen him.

In a thousand years, they say he showed himself to one mortal: Alaric, when he was named Chosen of the Forest.

Eldorian’s face darkens, and for a moment he cannot meet your eyes.

A great many in the village think this war is Ceres’s judgment.

That the forest rises against us because we earned it.

I want to call that foolishness. I do. But…

If the Forest Kings are truly extensions of her will, then how can one turn against the order she made? It should not be possible.

So if it is not her will, then it must be corruption. And if it is corruption… why does my heart still doubt? Eldorian: They are sovereigns of the whole forest. Not in name. Truly.

Growth. Movement. Predation. Silence. Paths.

When a Forest King commands, the living wood obeys. So… be ready for anything. Eldorian: Of course. The Eternal Forest is a world within itself.

Each forest kingdom has its own King, the way our regions have their rulers.

My people believe mortal hierarchies echo the gods’ order, pale reflections of what the forest already is. Eldorian: They are Ceres’s mandates, delivered to the Forest Kings through communion.

They set the balances: how tall trees may grow, how fast, how much wolves may take, how much deer may graze.

And they reach into mortal life as well: how much hunting is tolerated, how many trees may be felled. Everything. Eldorian: Yes. Alaric has earned that trust.

And so have you.

I need to hold to that, or I’ll vanish into questions. Eldorian: Maybe.

Survival does not ask whether our hearts are ready for it.

Even so… it still feels like I am raising my hand against part of what made me. Eldorian: That’s Haylor’s Mill.

It belongs to the Haylor family, and it feeds a good part of Earlwood besides.

Before all this, the village was proud of its harvests. Trade, grain, good earth. That is why the founding families came. Eldorian: Oh, I’ve known them for quite some time.

I met them when I first came to Earlwood. Fifty years ago, perhaps.

Master Haylor was only a boy then. No older than ten.

I taught him the bow, a little hunting, how to move through the forest without announcing every step.

The old Haylor hated those trips.

The boy loved them.

Then he grew, had sons of his own, and somehow I was still there for that too.

Some villagers resent the family for their wealth. But they are not like the Mayor. Practical, yes. Hard at times. But good-hearted. Eldorian: Ha. There are those who would agree with you.

But no, I don’t think that’s the truth of them.

Some villagers resent the family for their wealth. But they are not like the Mayor. Practical, yes. Hard at times. But good-hearted. Eldorian: Safe in the main part of the village.

They survived the attacks, thankfully. Others did not.

When the fighting ends, there will be much to mend. Eldorian: It is, isn’t it? That is one of the strange gifts of being an elf among humans.

They grow, they change, they die, and bring new life after them.

And you remain much the same. Eldorian: I have known three generations of Haylor.

They have never given me reason to doubt them. Not once. Eldorian: Corin? Ah, that’s my little brother.

Well… not by blood. Near enough, though.

He was a boy when he first came here. Goblins had wiped out his family.

The Guild took him in after that. He trailed after Alaric like a puppy, only with that hard little scowl he still wears. Eldorian: I trained him some, when Alaric and Rahaner had other duties.

Corin is an extraordinary fighter. He may be young, but there is real greatness in him.

If he keeps walking this path, he may stand beside Alaric one day.

When he was still a boy and I put him through drills, his speed was startling. His footwork too. Human or elf, I had seen very few move like that. Eldorian: Ha. Perhaps. Though I’d say we both admired him for good reason.

When he was still a boy and I put him through drills, his speed was startling. His footwork too. Human or elf, I had seen very few move like that. Eldorian: Yes. That is exactly it.

His will is fierce. Almost frighteningly so.

It may be the only will I’ve seen that comes near Alaric’s, but it was born from a very different fire.

I remember his first real mission. I was his partner.

It was meant to be a simple scout route. Just the two of us. It did not stay simple for long.

We came upon a small Goblin pack. I tried to guide him through the trees, to avoid them.

Corin ran straight at them.

He was carrying all that rage from what they had done to his family. When he saw them, that was all that mattered.

I turned to help him, but before I could reach him, he was already among them.

A blur of steel. A figure of whirling death.

In moments, the smaller Goblins were down. Only one larger brute remained, bigger than the Bashers we see around here now.

When it swung, Corin ran up its arms, carved through it as he moved, and took its head clean off.

The blood washed from him easily enough.

But not from his eyes.

It took me time to understand that the blood in his eyes had been there long before that day. Eldorian: No, they are not.

But training reveals what is already there, and Corin had something rare in him from the beginning.

But no, I don’t think that was my doing.

He is driven by something deep, and as his big brother… I worry what that drive may make of him. Eldorian: He has warmth in him. Truly.

I hope one day you get to see that side of him. Eldorian: Well… now that you mention it, yes. I was hoping you might join me for another night watch. I could use the company. Eldorian: Ha. I like thinking of it that way too. Come on, then. I know just the place.

This is the place.

I wanted to bring you here properly.

We passed it by last time. It is my favorite spot in all the farmlands. Eldorian: Good. Come on, then. I know the place.

This is the place.

I wanted to bring you here properly.

We passed it by last time. It is my favorite spot in all the farmlands. Eldorian: Oh. All right. Another night, then.

This is the place.

I wanted to bring you here properly.

We passed it by last time. It is my favorite spot in all the farmlands. Eldorian: Eldorian smiles faintly.

Yes. I had a feeling you would say that. Come closer. There is more to see.

Eldorian steps to the edge of the rise and peers out beneath the moon. After a moment, he lifts a hand and beckons you closer.

Do you see it yet?

The farmlands sprawl out before you, all ruin, with figures of Goblins running across the horizon. Eldorian: Maybe at first glance. Come closer. Give it another look.

Eldorian steps to the edge of the rise and peers out beneath the moon. After a moment, he lifts a hand and beckons you closer.

Do you see it yet?

The farmlands sprawl out before you, all ruin, with figures of Goblins running across the horizon. Eldorian: I told you before that one day I hope to show you these fields as they were.

I cannot do that. Not yet.

But I can show you something else. What I see.

Eldorian steps back and draws a slow breath. He lifts his eyes to the moon, and the light in them deepens, bright with temporal magic. Then he raises one hand and lets the gathered spell scatter into the air before you.

The magic settles into a trembling lens. Through it, the farmlands appear as they were not so long ago: moonlit wheat shifting in the wind, warm light in the homesteads, and nightbirds crossing the open sky.

I cannot show you the fields as they truly were. Not yet.

But I can show you this.

An echo. What I see. Eldorian: Exactly.

That is what your eyes see.

Not mine.

An echo. What I see. Eldorian: I’m glad you think so.

Eldorian eases down to the ground and motions for you to join him. He studies the shimmering echo for a few breaths before speaking in a softer voice.

No one else can cast this. No one else can even see it, unless I open it to them.

It comes from something particular. My bond to this place. My elven nature. My memories of what this land was, and my hope for what it might be again.

That may be the truest thing about magic. It is bound to identity in both form and experience.

What you are shapes how it appears. What you have lived shapes what it can hold.

That is why one spell from one person can mean something entirely different in the hands of another.

He glances at you and smiles, a little shyly.

I wanted to bring you here after our last talk.

I wanted you to see what I see when I say this land is worth saving.

It steadies me. And it makes me want to be better. Eldorian: It’s true. We are sentimental.

It comes of living so close to time.

It steadies me. And it makes me want to be better. Eldorian: A beautiful heart…

You may not know how much that means to me.

We have hard days ahead. But I am glad you are here for them.

Another strange thing about being an elf…

You are not always certain whether a vision belongs to the past or the future.

Sometimes the burden is deciding which it is.

As he speaks, your eyes drift to his wound, still bandaged and healing. Eldorian notices your gaze linger there for a moment. Eldorian: I’m glad you see it too.

That gives me hope.

We have hard days ahead, but I believe we can do this.

Remember.

There is a difference.

As he speaks, your eyes drift to his wound, still bandaged and healing. Eldorian notices your gaze linger there for a moment. Eldorian: Ha, don’t worry over it.

It has healed enough already.

I’ll be back in the fight soon.

I have you to thank for that.

Without you, that day might have been my last. Eldorian: Ha. You are right again.

Don’t worry. I’ll be more careful.

I like to think I’ve learned that lesson.

I have you to thank for that.

Without you, that day might have been my last. Eldorian: I feel the same.

I do not want to lose you either, or the chance to know you better.

I’ll be more careful.

Come. It’s time we head back to the Guild Hall. Eldorian: I know, I know.

You, Alaric, Saqi… everyone says the same.

Only Corin doesn’t.

Come. It’s time we head back to the Guild Hall. Eldorian: That is one way to see it.

Still, I’m grateful.

Come. It’s time we head back to the Guild Hall.

Eldorian: Don’t worry. The forest is still my home, even when it’s angry. I know how to vanish between the trees and read the leaves well enough to find my way back. Eldorian: Eldorian spots you and his smile widens, his posture straightening with sudden energy.

You made it back! I was really hoping you would. We all heard the Goblin King’s death-cry from here. Saqi nearly dropped a whole tray of mugs. Earlwood owes you more than a round of drinks, you know.

Eldorian: You can clearly see that, behind Eldorina’s smile, he carries a deep pain.

Don’t worry about me, friend. I’ll stay here for a while… I just need some time to think. Eldorian: Hello again. Do you have a moment? I’d like you to join me on a scout. Eldorian: Oh! I must have lost track of time again. But there’s something I have to see to first. I can’t go back until it’s done! Eldorian: There’s a wolf, a Fangra, tracking too close to the road. It’s a risk to anyone passing by. They don’t usually stray this far in.

I was supposed to head back, but I can’t leave this unchecked. If you’re willing to take care of it, I could return to Alaric. Eldorian: Thank you. The Fangra aren’t normal wolves; they’re faster and smarter. Meaner, too. Be ready.

I’ll return to the village. Hopefully, we’ll meet again soon.

Eldorian straightens up, trying to look composed as he gestures toward the treeline.

So. When the gate opens, everyone starts moving in. I’ve cleared most of the spots the guild could be ambushed from. There are a few left I couldn’t finish off. I’m low on supplies and Alaric would tan my hide if I pushed any further. If you could handle these last places, it would help a lot. Eldorian: Oh, right, the forest gate! Sorry, got carried away for a moment.

Eldorian straightens up, trying to look composed as he gestures toward the treeline.

Here, these circles. Watch the ridge lines. That’s where they like to lurk.

Eldorian hefts his pack with a small wince, adjusting the straps as he gets ready to leave.

I should get going. I’d love to stay and watch you fight, but these last skirmishes wore me out, and I’ve taken a few too many hits. Alaric keeps telling me to be more cautious and wait for the right moment. I’m trying to listen, for once. Is there anything else you need before I head back? Eldorian: I… sorry, you are right. I overdid it again. Here, I’ll mark the spots. Just… make sure you come back in one piece, alright?

Eldorian hefts his pack with a small wince, adjusting the straps as he gets ready to leave.

Alaric keeps telling me to be more cautious and wait for the right moment. I’m trying to listen, for once. Is there anything else you need before I head back? Eldorian: Mostly forest spirits. The goblins don’t like this area much. The treants would crush them if they got too bold. So expect plenty of tree-folk and dryads, quick and agile. Eldorian: You too. May Ceres guide your blade out there. Eldorian: Oh… right. Understood. Well then… I’ll see you when this is done. Eldorian: Don’t worry. The forest is still my home, even when it’s angry. I know how to vanish between the trees and read the leaves well enough to find my way back. Eldorian: Hm… not much. Let me check. Ah, here, I’ve got a few potions left. Take them. It’ll make me feel better about running home to rest.

Dialogue — SQ1

Eldorian: I knew you would. Truly. Thank you.

Eldorian leans in and whispers.

Meet me in the forest, at this spot. I’ll be waiting. Together, we’ll cut this corruption out at the root. Eldorian: Not a good idea? Why not? If we leave it, it grows. It always grows.

Eldorian leans in and whispers.

Meet me in the forest, at this spot. I’ll be waiting. Together, we’ll cut this corruption out at the root. Eldorian: No. This one’s mine. I spotted signs while scouting. It felt like a trail begging to be followed. Eldorian: Good. Ceres guide our blades. Eldorian: You would leave me to it. I… fine. I’ll go, then. I’ll see you around. Eldorian: No. Not yet. He tells me to think for myself. And when we return with proof… he’ll be impressed. Eldorian: I’m fine, thanks to you. A quick potion and I’ll be back on my feet.

He stands up, leaning against the tree, slowly straightening himself as he regains strength.

Another minute and I’d have been wolf meat. So… thank you.” he exhales, steadying himself “Alaric always tells me I’m reckless. That I’m… remarkably short-sighted for an elf. He might be right, this time. Eldorian: Ha… maybe so.” cough “Still. Seeing you fight… that was impressive.

He stands up, leaning against the tree, slowly straightening himself as he regains strength.

He might be right, this time. Eldorian: I went to scout the source. The wolves hit me the moment I stepped in. I didn’t read the signs fast enough. An elf, ambushed in his own forest. Embarrassing. Eldorian: I’ll live. Potions mend deep cuts quickly, and I brought plenty. Eldorian: You’re right… I swear it. No more rushing in.

Eldorian takes a breath and imitates a steadier cadence.

He says it the same way every time.” “Thought before action. Intuition is thought, trained into instinct. Information. Assessment. Decision. Then swift action. That’s… the order. Eldorian: I… maybe you’re right.” he looks away “No more rushing in. I swear it.

He says it the same way every time.” “Thought before action. Intuition is thought, trained into instinct. Information. Assessment. Decision. Then swift action. That’s… the order. Eldorian: Oh. You know…” a weak laugh “We elves can see into the future, a little. Not enough to save me from this, I guess… ha. Ha. Eldorian: Then I should have learned more than I have.

He tests his stance, then nods to himself.

Well… it’s quieter now. And I’m healing quickly.” “I’ll head back. And… I should report this to Alaric. Eldorian: I do listen. I just… fail at it sometimes.

He tests his stance, then nods to himself.

Well… it’s quieter now. And I’m healing quickly.” “I’ll head back. And… I should report this to Alaric. Eldorian: Yes. And no.” small, uneasy smile “I ask. He answers when he can. Often he just… looks at me, and I’m meant to understand. Eldorian: No need to worry, friend. I’m still an elf. One step into the treeline and nothing will see or hear me. I’ll see you soon. I hope. Eldorian: I will. I’ll think on it, and change. I swear it. Eldorian: As he always does.” a small wince “A stern face, with sterner words.

Dialogue — SQ2

Eldorian: Yes. Different, this time. I promise you.

These are… ah, my orders from Rahaner. Part of my punishment for going off alone last time, without telling anyone. Eldorian: No. Not like last time. I swear it.

These are… ah, my orders from Rahaner. Part of my punishment for going off alone last time, without telling anyone. Eldorian: Ha… yes. But it’s different from my usual scouting.

he swallows

Rahaner assigned me a perimeter pass. Fields and treeline, then the old scout posts. I’m to re-mark them. It’s a recruit’s task. I understand why it’s mine today. Eldorian: he blinks “Locking me up? No. Rahaner and Alaric wouldn’t do that. This job is different from my usual scouting.

he swallows

Rahaner assigned me a perimeter pass. Fields and treeline, then the old scout posts. I’m to re-mark them. It’s a recruit’s task. I understand why it’s mine today. Eldorian: blushes hard “A date. I, I didn’t mean to… suggest anything. But your company would be welcome.

he glances up, more careful than usual

It’s simple work. We re-mark what’s faded, then we finish at the last point here. No rushing. No disappearing. If we spread out, we stay in sight. Eldorian: Yes. Discipline. Slow steps, sharp eyes. It goes faster as two.

he glances up, more careful than usual

It’s simple work. We re-mark what’s faded, then we finish at the last point here. No rushing. No disappearing. If we spread out, we stay in sight. Eldorian: Pity isn’t what I want. I’m grateful. I just… wanted to spend time with you, without danger pressing in.

he glances up, more careful than usual

It’s simple work. We re-mark what’s faded, then we finish at the last point here. No rushing. No disappearing. If we spread out, we stay in sight. Eldorian: Normally I range deeper in the forest. Tracks, wind, broken leaves. I’m meant to see trouble before it sees us. Eldorian: Good. Thank you. Let’s do it properly. Eldorian: I understand. I’ll do my route and wait at the last point. Just… don’t take risks out there. Eldorian: If we keep to the scout line and away from the worst ground, we should be safe. You’ve fought them. I’ve seen it. Goblins aren’t a threat when we keep our heads. Eldorian: Just as I thought. It’s been a long while since Earlwood has seen a fighter like you.

His gaze drifts over the farmland.

It pains my heart, seeing the fields scarred and burned.

Well. The task is done. I haven’t had time to really look at these fields in a long while. They were beautiful once, and so were the people who worked them. Eldorian: No need to pretend you were at the edge of it. I’ve seen you fight. They were never a danger to you.

It pains my heart, seeing the fields scarred and burned.

Well. The task is done. I haven’t had time to really look at these fields in a long while. They were beautiful once, and so were the people who worked them. Eldorian: It will. Yes. You’ve already done so much to make that true.

One day… I hope you can see these fields as they were. I hope I’m the one who gets to show you. Eldorian: Harsh words. But you’re right. If it’s strong enough, it endures. I know it.

One day… I hope you can see these fields as they were. I hope I’m the one who gets to show you. Eldorian: I can honor both. The forest has its beauty. What people build with their mind and their labor has another beauty, equal in its own way. Any true follower of Ceres knows that. Eldorian: No. I was born in the Eternal Forest, like most elves. But when I heard the stories, I came. Earlwood became home. The people more than the place. Eldorian: Then it’s a promise. One day we’ll walk the fields again, rebuilt and bright as they once were.

If there’s nothing else, you can head back to the village. I think I’ll stay here a little longer. Just… a quiet moment to myself. Eldorian: It will be. I dream of seeing it whole again.

If there’s nothing else, you can head back to the village. I think I’ll stay here a little longer. Just… a quiet moment to myself. Eldorian: That saddens me to hear. What is life, if we can’t learn to see what’s beautiful in it?

If there’s nothing else, you can head back to the village. I think I’ll stay here a little longer. Just… a quiet moment to myself. Eldorian: You too, friend. I’d like to speak again soon. Eldorian: Goodbye. Stay safe out there.
